Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping societies and transforming entire industry verticals. In healthcare, in particular, they are enabling breakthrough discoveries, accelerating clinical trials, and significantly reducing the time from research to market.
Between October 19–21 last year, the GFCC, Council on Competitiveness, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University hosted Forging the Future: The Intersection of Health, AI and Tech in Pittsburgh.
This global gathering marked the first time GFCC and the Council on Competitiveness held their flagship events, GFCC’s Global Innovation Summit and the Council’s Competitiveness Conversations Across America, into a single, integrated platform.
This pioneering effort brought together perspectives from Pittsburgh, across the United States, and from the global GFCC network, creating a dynamic forum that bridged local realities with global competitiveness strategies. Participants examined how advances in tech and innovation are not only transforming healthcare systems, but also driving new models of local and regional economic growth.
"The convergence of health, artificial intelligence, and technology represents far more than a technological frontier—it is an economic imperative and a fundamental commitment to leverage innovation to solve health challenges and improve lives at scale", writes GFCC President Deborah L. Wince-Smith and GFCC Chairman Chad Holliday in an introduction letter in the new released report. "In Pittsburgh, we witnessed firsthand how investments in health innovation and AI are transforming the local economy and creating models of renewal that resonate worldwide."
The GFCC and the Council on Competitiveness now release a comprehensive capturing the discussions held during the Summit along with key insights and real-world examples shared throughout the event.
In addition, the publication includes an exclusive snapshot of Pittsburgh’s innovation ecosystem, highlighting key indicators related to regional economic performance, investment strategies, priority industries, workforce development, and enabling infrastructure. This analysis positions Pittsburgh as a compelling case study of how place-making innovation strategies can successfully integrate research, industry, and policy to generate sustained growth.
