Tsukuba Study Trip: Registration is Now Open
Registration is now open for the Tsukuba Study Trip, taking place February 14–18, 2027, in Tsukuba and Tokyo in Japan.
Hosted by the University of Tsukuba and the Tsukuba Global Innovation Promotion Agency (TGI), the program examines how a research-intensive region and one of the world's oldest planned science city moves from research concentration toward industry creation, commercialization, talent development, and global collaboration.
Designated by Japan’s Cabinet in 1963 and built around 43 relocated national research institutions, Tsukuba is one of the world’s longest-running experiments in planning an innovation region from the ground up, and its current focus on commercialization speaks directly to challenges facing research hubs worldwide.
The program is organized around four themes: the university as an anchor for regional transformation, the evolution from science city to ecosystem, microbial bioeconomy and sustainability, and the industrial connection platforms linking research assets to startups and corporate partners.
The program includes a welcome reception, conversation sessions, site visits and roundtables covering the University of Tsukuba’s International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (IIIS), its MiCS microbial research center, and the Future Society Design Complex, followed by national research centers working in space, quantum technology, advanced materials, and genetic resources.
The trip concludes in Tokyo with visits to Hitachi’s Lumada Innovation Hub and Oriental Giken, and a meeting with the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s International Affairs Department.
