GFCC Vice-chair, Mr. Charles Kiefel AM, recently funded a study tour to the United States to visit leading national laboratories specializing in nuclear science and technology, including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
A long-time advocate for civilian use of nuclear energy, Mr. Kiefel sees nuclear power as a key step to facilitate Australia's transition to clean energy.
The visit aimed to explore ways to leverage US know-how and emerging technologies to help develop an industry in Australia that could provide reliable, emissions-free energy. This exchange builds on a long-standing collaboration between the two countries and the UK in nuclear submarines.
Mr. Kiefel travelled to the US with Former Federal Government Trade Minister and current Shadow Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, the Honorable Dan Tehan MP.
"There is a global trend towards nuclear energy. Since 1951, the United States has practiced nuclear civilian power, and it is the world's best practice now. In Europe, over six countries have moved to nuclear. Nuclear is entering a new renaissance", says Mr. Charles Kiefel AM.
