GFCC welcomes Dr. Cláudio Furtado as new Distinguished Fellow

The GFCC is pleased to welcome Dr. Cláudio Vilar Furtado as a Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Furtado has prestigious corporate experience in business and finance and served the Brazilian government as the President of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) between 2019 and 2023. He is also an influential business professor, specialized in investments, corporate finance, corporate governance, business economics, private equity and venture capital.

In addition, his recent leadership of Brazil’s INPI underscores his commitment to innovation and productivity, having transformed that institution with an unprecedented and successful modernization model", comments GFCC president, the Honorable Deborah L. Wince-Smith.

 

In his role at INPI, Dr. Furtado led new business and digital transformation strategies, achieving record productivity in technical decisions regarding patents and trademarks. During his mandate, 92% of the social costs imposed by a backlog of 150,000 pending patent examinations were eliminated. He was also responsible for adhering to the global practices of the Madrid and Hague Protocols regarding trademarks and industrial designs. Besides that, he acted as the rotating President of IP-BRICS (2019-2020), among other activities and achievements.

I intend to humbly but effectively contribute with knowledge on innovative investment, considering intellectual property as an enabler of a country's innovation ecosystem. This has been the focus of my mission in leading the Brazilian INPI in the past four years", comments Dr. Furtado.

 

Dr. Furtado was also a Tenured Professor at the São Paulo School of Business Administration of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV-São Paulo) from February 1974 to July 2022, when he retired. He taught undergraduates and graduates in the disciplines of Investment Strategy, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, and Private Equity and Venture Capital, Additionally, Dr. Furtado sat on the board of companies and has been a consultant in finance and real sector investments for over 30 years.
