Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established in 1997 and has grown to be one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia.  Offering a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, it aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities. 

The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries locally and abroad focusing on nine niche areas.  They are Enhanced Oil Recovery, Carbon Dioxide Management, Deepwater Technology, Nanotechnology, Green Technology, Biomedical Technology, Hybrid Energy Systems, Intelligent Cities and Sustainable Resources. UTP is the first and only private university to be awarded a 6-star rating (the highest performance level) by they Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia for its research, development and commercialization efforts. UTP continues to provide distinctive educational opportunities to its students with the rating of Tier 5 (Excellent) University for SETARA (Rating System for the Malaysian Higher Education Institutions) and achieved Tier 5 for D-SETARA (Discipline-Based Rating System) in Engineering.



Professor Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim

Bin Abdul Mutalib, Vice-Chancellor

Professor Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim bin Abdul Mutalib graduated from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia with a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering.

At Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Professor Dr. bin Abdul Mutalib was appointed as Lecturer II and became the founding Head of Programme for Chemical Engineering in 1998. He designed the curriculum for the Chemical Engineering programme and developed necessary support resources. In 2000, he was appointed as the Director of Research and Consultancy. Among his immediate responsibilities included development of the Research & Development (R&D) and Consultancy master plan for UTP.

In view of his past experience and contributions in management positions, he was reappointed to the university management position as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering in 2013. During his tenure, the faculty of engineering continued to progress strongly and has improved its QS World University ranking to the world’s top 300.

At the national level, he was involved in the development of Programme Standard for Engineering and Technology Programme for Malaysian Quality Agency in 2012, which is used as the standard for national accreditation for all universities. Due to his immense contribution, he had the privilege of working as a Reviewer with numerous groups including the National Research Grant Schemes such as IRPA, E-Science, FRGS and TechnoFund.

On 1st November 2017, he assumed the position of Vice Chancellor for Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
